The Xrossing

On July 8 - 9, 1pm - 5pm, SeedArts presents, The Xrossing, a daring highwire spectacle for Lismore celebrating the unbelievable story of Lismore-born, Aboriginal tightwire virtuoso, Con Colleano, the world's greatest known as the Wizard of the Wire.

The Xrossing premieres during NAIDOC Week and sees some of Australia’s best professional wire walkers undertake a series of breathtaking wire walks on 60-metre long tightwires, suspended high above the Lismore Quad. Created by a crack team of local and interstate Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, The Xrossing honours the little-known story of Con Colleano, born Lismore 1899 to a Gamilaroi mother and Irish father who became the greatest wire walker of all time. The Xrossing celebrates this unsung hero of Lismore and examines Colleano’s legacy of being the first to achieve the impossible front sault on the wire, a feat which brought him incredible fame, recognition and wealth. The show features multi-level wire walking, an original score by upcoming Indigenous producer Mr Rhodes, live music from the Northern Rivers Conservatorium Youth Jazz Orchestra and breathtaking artistry from professionals and community members alike.

In preparation for The Xrossing, SeedArts delivers Wizards of the Wire 'wire-walking-for-well-being' workshops in the Quad in June 16, 26 - 28 with students from the Rivers Secondary College and on July 1- 4 with community members. Workshops are free but bookings are essential. See above for the link to book.

The ‘Wizards of the Wire’ workshops share the benefits of funambulism - the art of wire-walking with a balance pole - with local Indigenous and non-Indigenous young people and community members as a way to appreciate Con Colleano, his life and legacy through literally walking in his shoes whilst promoting positive mental health and wellbeing activities. Funambulism is a great mindfulness tool and offer participants a great therapeutic, post-flood, creative recovery activity. Workshop graduates are then invited to participate as 'community walkers' for The Xrossing event.
